5 things I learned from my grade school classmates

7/16/2011
Last night I had a blast with a couple of my grade school (Grade 7 to be exact) classmates.   Whenever I go to this kind of gatherings, “kuwentuhan” is the best!!!  You go back memory lane,,,”nuon wala pang Megamall at Edsa Shangri-la, tambay lang sa Mcdo sa Edsa Central or sa Manuela”…P500 pesos pa lang ata ang Levi’s…

Since we are now in our late 30s (masakit man aminin), our stories revolved around schoolmates, friends, families, work, and hobbies….Anyway, I just want to share some of the important things I picked up from last night….

1.       Death and Critical Illness are already knocking on our doors…..a schoolmate (one batch lower) who used to be a basketball varsity player already passed away a couple of months ago….another schoolmate (one batch higher) also passed away recently….I heard both of their illnesses were related to the heart……some of our batchmates’ parent/s are already gone….the wife of our batchmate suffered from breast cancer but gladly recovered…..

2.       Health is wealth….since we are nearing 40, some of us are already taking maintenance/medicines for high cholesterol, hypertension, etc…we also are dreading the thought of going through prostate and colon cancer preventive checkups….on the positive side, some of our batchmates are now actively taking on sports, biking, running, and of course, basketball is still a favorite……a few are also watching what they eat, they are now into salads, more fish and vegetables, and less fatty foods….although siempre,  minsan lang naman, so last night we had chicharon, isaw, liempo, balut, dilis, etc….whew!!!!

3.       Family and kids…..although some of us are still single, majority have families and kids already…the kids are still toddlers or some are in grade school or high school na….we even have one batchmate, yun anak nya nasa college na.  =)……anyway, most of us have a long way to go in terms of supporting and nurturing our kids….it is evident in our conversation, that as always, we want the best for our kids….

4.       To stay or not to stay in Manila! Manila!....some of our batchmates are already abroad with their families….we missed them but we wish them all the best….anyway, whether here or there, basta we are pursuing what we love to do or we are working hard for our families’ future…..

5.   Cream class or not, it all depends on your perseverance, attitude and “diskarte”…….some of us belong to the cream or pilot section (in other words, yun mga matatalino daw)…while some don’t and had a grand “skul bukol” time in grade/high school…..whether cream class or not, you can see that some are now very successful with their businesses/jobs….we also heard of “sad” stories of batchmates who are apparently struggling…with this you may say that education is important but perseverance, self-belief and “diskarte” are also keys to success in life. Sama na rin ang good luck and God's blessings....

Hope this helps...
